Your Daily Dose for April 17, 2008
Imagine being trapped in an elevator for an hour. It would probably be a fairly harrowing experience. Though it would pale in comparison to Nick Paumgarten's experience of being trapped in an elevator for 41 hours. The entire ordeal was captured on security camera, and has been sped up, providing a five minute view of how he spent his 41 hours of captivity. Here is a link to the video footage. And here is a link to the accompanying story from the New Yorker. Related: MacMitchell's blog | login or register to post comments | Tags: Daily Dose | Elevators | Mac Mitchell

Nothing confirmed at second neighborhood traffic calming meeting
The St. Johns County Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program had its second public meeting at Fruit Cove Middle School last night, March 6 at 7 p.m. Over 50 Julington Creek residents attended the meeting, which intended to propose and discuss possible solutions to the speeding problem throughout the Julington Creek neighborhood. -The first proposed solution involved intersection improvements around the neighborhood, consisting of pavement markings and striped stop bars, speed feedback signs and 6” yellow and white edge lines. -The second solution proposed installing an approximated 11 speed humps on numerous roads in the Julington Creek area. The humps would be 22 feet long, and could reduce overall speeds anywhere from five to nine miles per hour. It was mentioned that these humps could possibly cause some drainage issues. Hi! I'm the new guy
As a male I have never been very interested in the world of shoes. I know what they are. I understand there are different styles. And on a good day, I'm even able to tie them. That seemed to cover all the bases until I was recently faced with a new shoe problem...filling them. Not mine, but someone else's. Terry Brown recently relinquished his position here with the St. Johns Sun. I have never met Terry, but his legacy is enough to let me know that filling his shoes may be as equally difficult as striking up an engaging conversation with a pretty girl who has the ability to walk away from me at any point. What I'm trying to say is that it's a task I'm not completely sure I'm capable of. My name is Mac Mitchell, and I have recently joined the family here at the St. Johns Sun as a reporter and photographer. It's my job to pick up where Terry left off, as well as to provide Mark Pettus with a bit of relief and much needed rest. I am looking forward to getting to know all of you, and am thrilled to be involved with such an incredible group of hard working and dedicated individuals who will stop at nothing to provide the best news coverage of the county. With that said, I'm slightly nervous about trying to fill a spot where the bar has already been set fairly high. So I would ask that the readers, community members and fellow bloggers allow me to wear my own shoes, rather than fill those of another. Rest assured that my footwear is fresh and clean, versatile and slightly larger than needed, in order to provide a little growing room. I can't guarantee they won't get a little dirty or ripped along the way, but I will promise to wear them with pride, enthusiasm and socks. Thanks for having me. |
