High school students from Six countries are coming to our area July 2, 2008 through July 29, 2008 for a short 4-week stay through EF Educational Homestay Programs.           We are looking for loving families who are willing to share their hearts and homes with a young person from another country.  The students have studied English in school and are anxious to spend their summer learning first hand about American family life, culture and community.  This educational experience is also an incredible cultural opportunity for your family!           The students come fully insured and bring their own spending money.  We ask that our host families provide a bed for the student (they do not need to have their own room), meals, transportation to and from a designated bus stop in your area and provide a warm loving environment. The students will be occupied with English classes in the mornings at our course center and then they will enjoy fun activities in the afternoons.  The local EF staff will be available to the Host Families 24 hours a day; 7 days a week during the students stay.       Host Family members earn exciting travel opportunities.   High School students can earn Community Service hours per their schools requirements.    Training and orientation will be provided prior to the student’s arrival.

ACCORD through the generosity of the Northrop Grumman Corporation will launch  Phase II of its Freedom Trail Project with the unveiling of ten additional historical markers that mark the significant sites where civil rights activities took place during the American Civil Rights Movement of St. Augustine led by Dr. Robert B. Hayling, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).  The Public is invited to attend all events.   Kick-off for the celebration begins June 28, 2008, 10:00 A.M. with a Family Fun Day to be held at the Excelsior African American Cultural Museum.  There will be guided tours of the Freedom Trail narrated by local historian David Nolan, on the RED Sightseeing Train.  There will be lots of food, drinks, games, educational events, dunking booth, face painting, historical displays, and much, much more for the entire family.  This event is free and open to the public.  Children 10 and under, must be accompanied by an adult.  Volunteers needed, please call Carrie at (904) 825-1194. On July 2, 1964 President Lyndon Baines Johnson signed into law the strongest civil rights bill and called on all Americans to, “…eliminate the last vestiges of injustice in America”.   Forty-four years later on this significant date in history, The 40th ACCORD, Inc. will sponsor a Freedom Trail Tour compliments of the St. Augustine RED Sightseeing Train beginning at 9:00 A.M. and embarking from the Casa Monica Hotel, 95 Cordova Street.  Once again ACCORD will honor “True American Heroes”.  Mrs. Rena Ayers, 103 year old housemother to the civil rights movement will be honored during The Second Annual Freedom Trail Luncheon to be held at the Casa Monica’s Flagler Ballroom.  Tickets can be purchased for a donation of $35 per person.  Special guests include Ms. Sandra Evers-Manley (relative of slain NAACP field secretary, Medgar Evers), Vice-President of Corporate Responsibility for the Northrop Grumman Corporation, Los Angeles, CA and Dr. Robert B. Hayling a local dentist & civil rights leader of the St. Augustine Civil Rights Movement.  Keynote Speaker for the event will be living legend, Rev. Dr. C.T. Vivian of Atlanta, GA.  He was a lieutenant with SCLC and close personal friend of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  According to Speak Out Now, Rev. Dr. C.T. Vivian continues his activism today, tirelessly working for the progress of African Americans and the civil and political rights of all peoples. An uplifting speaker, he has addressed audiences in 42 states, 10 countries, and on countless campuses nationwide on the issues of civil rights, non-violence, racism and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with whom he worked for many years.

A Baptist minister, his first use of non-violent direct action was in 1947, to end Peoria's segregated lunch counters. Later he founded the Nashville Christian Leadership Conference, organizing the first sit-ins there in 1960 and the first civil rights march in 1961. Rev. Vivian was a rider on the first "Freedom Bus" into Jackson, Mississippi, and went on to work along-side Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on his Executive Staff in Birmingham, Selma, Chicago, Nashville. the March on Washington; Danville, Virginia; and St. Augustine, Florida. During the summer following the Selma Movement, Rev. Vivian conceived and directed an educational program, Vision, and put 702 Alabama students in college with scholarships. The program later became Upward Bound.

Rev. Vivian has been featured as an activist and an analyst in the civil rights documentary, "Eyes on the Prize," and has been featured in a PBS special, "The Healing Ministry of Dr. C. T. Vivian." He has made numerous appearances on "Oprah" as well as the "Montel Williams Show" and "Donahue." Rev. Vivian is the focus of the biography, Challenge and Change by Lydia Walker and he is author of Black Power and the American Myth, which was an Ebony Book Club Selection.

His leadership positions include Chairman of the Southern Organizing Committee Education Fund, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) the Black Action Strategies and Information Center (BASIC), and the Center for Democratic Renewal.

An eloquent and inspiring speaker, Rev. Vivian continues to speak out for racial justice and democracy.   Dr. C. T. Vivian is a battle-scarred American Civil Rights pioneer. The New School for Social Research presented Dr. Vivian with an honorary doctorate as "spiritual leader, apostle of social justice, strategist of the Civil Rights Movement...in the vanguard of the struggle for social equality in America."  Rev. Dr. C.T. Vivian is married to Octavia and they have six children.

Rev. C. T. Vivian, 83, is one of the closest living associates of Dr. Martin Luther King. He played an important part in the civil rights movement in St. Augustine in 1964 and is pictured in the center of a famous photograph showing the wade-in at St. Augustine Beach that attracted international attention.

The St. Johns County Pet Center is announcing the details of a lottery system to be used for a chance to adopt a dog at the Special Adoption Event scheduled for Saturday, July 12. Due the thousands of phone calls from individuals interested in adopting the animals rescued from the Tennessee puppy mill, a lottery system is now being implemented in lieu of the first-come, first-served system that was previously announced.

To offer a fair chance for everyone to adopt an animal and promote the welfare of all residents, a lottery system will be used. The gate to the Pet Center parking lot will open at 7:30 am and lottery tickets will be distributed between 7:30 and 9:00 am. The tickets will be limited to one per person and given only to adults aged 18 or older. The pure-bred animals will be limited to one adoption per household. Beginning at approximately 9:30 am, lottery tickets will be drawn to form the order in which individuals will be escorted into the Pet Center and have an opportunity to select an animal. When all the animals are adopted, additional tickets will be drawn to develop a waiting list for those animals not yet ready for adoption.
